IAB Video Advertising Community

Online TV, long and short form video, IPTV

Right, I’ve decided to start a video blog.

Each week I will interview a consumer, who doesn’t work in advertising, marketing or PR, and ask them questions about their usage, likes and dislikes when it comes to video. Whether that video be on a television, a PC, a mobile, in the back of a cab or on a 6 sheet poster – I’ll ask questions that should help us understand more about the video consumer.

I may even do more than one a week – and they will be uploaded to iabvideo.com

What I would like from you guys, is some suggestions for the questions I should be asking?

Over to you …

How important is it for the brands that you buy to have a presence on a Social Media platform like Facebook, Twitter or even YouTube?

In particular a video presence within them. You could probably wrap this into a broader set of questions like "Where do you watch video content? (TV, online, cinema, mobile etc.)" followed by "For video delivered online, which sites do you watch the video on? Broadcasters (like BBC, ITV, Ch4, Sky) | Social networks (like Facebook, Bebo, MySpace) | Dedicated video sites (like YouTube | Microsoft) etc etc"

It would be really interesting to see how large a part of social media video plays. Really good idea Mike.

Keeping it simple at first, I'd be interested in hearing what VOD services (on and offline) they are aware of and which they have used. If they can say what their favourite features are and why, and what their disikes, are that would be useful too. I think research on VOD services is a bit thin on the ground and would be interested in getting some quite topline views on it.

Thanks all.

I've interviewed a couple of students - one in chemestry and one in law.

I hope to find time to edit it tonight, and if I do I will post it ahead of the meetign tomorrow so we can rip it to peices, and find the right format moving forward.

Cheers,

Mike

I think we need to define a set of questions that are helpful to all ...let me know what you think.

Cheers,

Mike

Really good! A perfect example of a tech savvy, young and demanding video user.

Also, love the fact she mentions some linking sites on here like suftthechannel and alluc, that link to illegally hosted content. Just proves though that VOD needs a serious kick because if people can't get the content that they want, when they want it, they'll just get it from illegal sources, whether that be streaming sites or torrents. Bring on SeeSaw, Hulu etc!

She's clearly switched on when it comes to online; would be good for the next person to be of a different demographic and age (sure that is coming anyway).

Thanks Mike. Look forward to more.

Thanks Mike, continues to be insightful. Pete was clearly not into his tech as the last two, and interesting to hear that he was willing to consume mobile media, but that it needed to be easier/more straightforward to access, otherwise he'd just wait until he was next at a PC.

One thing I'd be interested to know is peoples' view surrounding frequency. It's always a bit of a sketchy area, but in terms of online video it could be good to ask how many times it takes before a video sticks in their head (obviously this depends on advertisier and creative-an average is probably all we could ask for) and how many times is annoying, to the extent they associate negatives thoughts with an ad.
